"HANSARD" STAFF.
USED BY QUEENSLAND MINISTERS,
In the Queensland Legislative Assembly recently Mr. Philip and other mombers protested strongly against the action of Minis'ters in taking "Hansard" roportors" with them on election tours to report- their'' speeches.. It was a public scandal, said Mr, Philip, that the "Hansard" staff should bo usod for party purposes. Mr. Bell (Minister for Lands) complained of the systematic misrepresentation by newspapers, and suggested that it might bo necessary to secure some accurate official medium for tho placing of news of Ministers and mombers beforo the people. Mr. Kidston said a principle was involved in tho use of "Hansard" reporters by Ministers, but it was necessary that tho speeches of public men should bo reported accurately. He had becomo convinced that the establishment of a Government newspaper was necessary, and if he remained in oflico it wa3 probable' that ho would ask Parliament to consont to the establishment of a Government daily nowspapor, the editor of which would have nothing to do with party politics. Tho Chairman ruled any further remarks on the subject out of ordnr.
