The promotion of industries is to be placed in .the forefront of their programme. Bengal is greatly struck at the dramatic collapso of the extremist party. The nativos Lajpat-Rai >and Ajit Singh, who have been released, attribute their release to King Edward's clemency. Thero was . great rejoicing inCalcutta. Hindu priests lod singing parties through tho streets, invoking blessings on King Edward. Pleas for leniency on behalf of tho deported Indians, Lajpat-Rai and Ajit Sengh, were mado in the House of Commons in Juno last. The Indian National Congress, which held its first gathering in 18oj. aimed to bo a political league of all the Indian races and religions; but,its critics allege that-it has become purely a Bengali league, and' that latterly it has left tho •consitutional path and has lent itself to "tho systematic creation of disaffection."
