0 n AN AUCKLAND DEPUTATION. ' The Mayor of Auckland (Mr. A. M. Myers) and Mr. u. J. Bagnali waited upon tho Act- J lng-Alinister for ruolic »oik.s yostcruuy morning tor tho purpose of making' a lurther protest on bumii of tho Auckland City Council against ttio Government's Tramways Bill. Tho objections to tho Bill, which vrjre urged by the recent joint deputation from the municipalities of the four largo centres, wero reiteratod by both Mr. Myers and Mr. Bagnail, with spccial reference to the conditions governing tne control of the Auckland tramway system. The supervision' exercised by tho City Council in : tno northern city over tho Tramways Company was claimed to bo oiheicnt and satisfactory, and it was argued 1 that there was no justification for tho pro- t posed interference with the logitimato func- c tions of tho local authority. • Tho Hon. Ho admitted, however, that thero was no necessity for some of its minor provisions, such as tho regulation of stoppiiig-plafces, and tho colour of lights to bo used on cars. Ho would, ho said, introdueo a number of amendments, but ho maintained that the essential principles of tho Bill wero provisions necessary to the cfficiont protection of the travelling public. _ s , In reply to Mr. Myers, tho Minister said 5 that ho lmd witnessed certain things in con- C nection with tho tramways which wero " abo solutely disgraceful," and which tho existing b by-laws did not moot. _ c Mr. Myers asked wliero these things had o occurred, but tho Minister declined to give t any further information,- beyond saying that , p ho was not referring to any particluar oity.
