WAIRARAPA NOTES.

(FROM OUR SPECIAL CORIIESPONDENT.) The Very ltev. Dean M'Keima has purchased the twenty years' lease of a Native seetiou of 500 acres, near Eketahuna, for his brother, who is at present iu Australia, but who intends- to settle- with liis family in the Dominion. Tlio land is at present in standing bush, which will be felled along with that of another 500 acres adjoining. A large amount of money is to be spent oji the whole block, which will thon bo one of the finest in tho Forty-Mile Bush. Wairarapa, Manawatu, and , Waikato farmers are making largo purchases of grass sc-ed in the South Island, owing to tho dear-ncss-of the article in the. North. Ono wellknown Manawatu man,- who bought a big consignment, stated that ho saved £50 oil Wellington Iproviiicial prices, and, in addition, saved his passage-money and other 'expenses to and from Christchurch. ,• Mr. Godfrey Taylor, secretary of tho Ballanco Dairy Company, states that tho Bush district cannot exist without rain, and plenty of it. Thero had now-just been a few continuous summer days, after months of wet, yet dairymen wero asking for rain. A Wairarapa sheep farmer, who recently attended a stock sale at Hamilton', states that the auctioneers there garglo their throats with a mixturo of kerosene and water in order to prevent hoarseness. Tho dilution is said to act splendidly, and to bo much botter than old-fashioned lubricants of an alcoholic nature. Care must bo taken, however; in tho uso of the keroseno process that tho patient does not swallow any of the liquid. - If he doos, ho may havo chances of spontaneous combustion, an internal explosion, and other inoro or less harrowing exporionces of illness. Shearing is in full swing in many-portions of tho district, and tho wool is rolling into tho railway stations (from nil directions. Mr. P. J. Dillon, of Matarnwa, Wairarapa, left Masterton yesterday for Hamilton, whore ho is to act as judgo in tho Down sheep classes at tho forthcoming show. -• It is expected that tho pay-shoot for tho month for tho Ballanco Dairy Company on Saturday noxt will run into about £3000: In Dccembor and January, tho payments avorago £7000 por month. Thoro aro in all about 200 suppliers. -Milk returns at tho creameries of tho Ballanco and Masterton Dairy Companies aro less than thoy woro at tho corresponding period last year. Tho lateness of tho sclson is partly rosponsiblo for this dccreaso, but another reason is that many dairymen aro dosorting cattle for sheep.
