FIGHTING A RIVER.

. Mr. A. I-lughan, of Taumata Island, near Waikakeke, Wairarapa, lias to maintain a continuous battlo with tlio Ruamahunga in order to prescrvo his property. Ho has devised a very good system, in connection with tho construction of basket groins of wire netting. Tho basket runs along tho bank of the river in such a manner that, the mouth is fast to the earth. Connected with this mouth is a wooden chuto, into which Mr. Hughan backs cartloads of boulders. Tho basket settles down to the bottom of the river, and when there is an erosion of the bank with a deepening stream, the boulders subsido, and tho property owner simply fills up tho bag. With basket groins aSs a protection for newly-planted willows, river banks have a chance of holding their own. A well-known authority contends that the planting of willows in this manner should be made compulsory, by Act of Parliament.
