Sharks. With tho summer weather experienced lately, sharks are already becoming numerous in tho Auckland Harbour.' On Sunday last a party.who were enjoying, a.big; haul of kahuwai off Hobson Bay-!were surprised at the appearanco of a largo shark, wh'.-jn took one of tho fish as well as as the line. A shark's line .was immediately put out, with tho result that the ferocious fish was hooked, and after .a great, struggle . was harpooned and captured. It riieasured 12ft'.. Wd is now fertilising the 'orchard of 0110 of the fishorman. There is a proposal hefore the ratepayers of Parnell to raise, a loan for the erection of swimming baths, and this shark • story is likely to cause an affirmative vote. National Endowments. Mr. W.,R. Bloomfield lias pointetd out to the Hospital Board that provision for hospital and charitable aid is being entirely omitted from the scheme of national endowments formulated by the Government. He Stated that the late Premier had promised to provide for this important work; but tlyi present proposals only embraced-.Education and Old Age Pensions. - It was a severe strain 011 tho ratepayers to- rcquire them to furnish the, wholo of the-funds'required for hospital, arid charitable' aid administration, and it was strange to-see the late Premier's proposals so suddenly ■ dropped. The matter in his opinion was of considerable importance, and should bo inquired ■ ,into. He moved that the chairman (at present in Wellington) be asked-to-wait on the Minister and bring before him the omission referred to. ■ The motion was carried. - A Curt Note. Tho Parnell'Borough Council, which to a large extent'was/responsible if or tho recent discussion ori'hospital'expenditure, had not-, up till the 28th of last' month,' paid any of its proportion due to' the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board-for tho year 1907-3, although seven ' months of the year had elapsed, and last night the Council received a curt note from the Secretary notifying that unless two instalments were : paid'within seven' days legal proceedings would' be instituted for tho recovery of the same. Tho Mayor (Mr. G. W. Bosley) made haste to explain- to tho somewhat alarmed Councillors that £72 had already been paid- in, and that :they .would be .'asked to sanction later in the'' evening , tho > payment of; a further £200- to the Board' to satisfy their domands. Mr;-Caleb Wood suggested that in sending' a cliequo along.they should ask tho Board.-to bo as ■ economical as possible ■with their expenditure. . . \ Costloy Home. :. ! In the midst- of all this talk about extravagance and oxtra burden on.local bodies there is an over-growing demand' upon the Board for moro expenditure. It now 'appears that tho Costley 'Homo; Auckland's equivalent to the Wellington Ohir.o Home,->reqiiire's. funds to' be "ifx'lifei'ideff' pSr'it. "At -the . time of the; recent , ■ scaro," says the Health Officer,. "..I got Mr. Jlyers (the Mayor of Aucldand) to cable 10 the Agent-General for information regarding ' a disinfector, but I tliink.'the" reason' the" city did not get one is that, tlio population , is not. large enough to justify it.".
