SEATOUN'S NEEDS.
WATER AND DRAINAGE COMING.
A SATISFACTORY COMPROMISE.
At tho present time Miramar is elysmm.if the rate bill is considered an ingredient in the, make-up of that Mecca for .weary souls. But Miramar has. ambition,, vaulting ambition "(as Shakespeare says), and if does not mean to always be a lo\v : rated. suburb-its late Mayor said that it would one day be the city.Wt'llington the suburb,, and. ho ought to know! Anyhow, Miramar Borough is progressive (violently progressive if land values be any guide), and it already has its electric tramway, and its Wonderland—and now it turns to matters mundane'.' It wants water and drainage. vSouie time ago ■it made a proposal-to,the city ■ asking to be supplied with water from a continuation, of our present mains, as the engineer.(Mr. Mestayer) reported that there was not a suitable catchment area within tho borough to supply it with'water all the year rotiud. After the pros an(l cons of tho matter have been carefully gone into the Finance Committee, has decided to report that Miramar shall be supplied with.water (at 9d. per 1000 gallons) so long as there is a ; surplus ovor and above a-safe supply for"Wellington city. Wellington does not, however, intend that tho ramifications''of Miramar's reticulation •shall l be permitted-to; city mains and so reduce the pressure at all hours. It is only to be allowed to draw off supplies during tholiight hours, and, finally; , the city reserves power to cut off "the supply altogether when there is sufficient reason. Having to draw the day's supply of water the night preceding will necessitate the construction of two re-servoirs—high-level and low level basins: If the loan proposal is carried,' it is'intended to erect the low-level-reservoir (into which the water will run from -the city main) on the Ewe Run Block, above' tho old golf links, and tho high-level reservoir will bo on an eminence near the outer signal station, to which the water will havo to bo pumped from tho lower basin by an engine. In the matter of drainage, it is now thought possiblo that the whole of tho Sea-toun-Karaka Bay drainage may bo brought through the tunnel and conveyed, with that from the flat,'-.into. tho. city's main outlet at Lyoll Bay. This ..has not, however,-been finally decided■,< upon. The meeting to authorise the: expenditure of £71.000 ; for the above objects (and some road-work along the tramway roads and foreshore).will be held on November 20.-. ■■■ .-...-• - ■
... The Miramar Borough Council is quite prepared to accept the water'supply on tho terms laid down by the Finance Committeo of tlie Wellington City Council.
