The suggestion was not received favourably, and Mr. , Cleland then demanded an inquiry. Tho Committee, after consideration, replied that it would hold an inquiry if Mr. Cleland would pay all the expense's of the same. Mr. Cleland is now. considering, the Committee's proposal. .In any,'case, ..Coltoy, who-rode-Apologue in : the Cauliield 'Cup, is not'likely to ride the New Zealandcr in the .Melbourne Cup. . ■ May lung '.pulled up. ■ slightly lame after winning the Moonco , Valley Cup. i Tho latest betting quotations for the Melbourne Cup are:—3 to 1 against Apologue, 7 tp 1 Tartan, 8 to 1 Mountain King, 10 to I Mooltan, Poseidon, and 'Welcome Trist, 12 to 1 being wanted about the latter; 16 to 1 Spinaway, 20 to 1 Bendigo, Dyed Garments and Talkcroo.
