"THE WINDSOR PALACE."' Hie pronounced activity of the building; tr,i(io in Wellington was the subject , of an article which appeared in a recent issue ofliif, Do.mimon. . There were certain inadvertent omissions, however,' which- would ;have swelled the figures mentioned considerably. thief among these was the "Windsor Palace," the huge private hotel on.the corner of Willis Street and Chew's. Lane, which V now ncaring completion. 'This..is-a fine soi'jd \ five-story block, 100 ft. square, that when finished will have cost somewhere in'the vicinity of £30,000. There is provision for a dining room to seat 35Q persons, and convenient grill and coffee roms, fitted with'the very, latest appliances, llic bedrooms: are largft and airy, and the single rooms are in nearly every case as large as the 'double ones in most
hotels. There will be passenger and luggage" elevators, .'cosy sitting-roo'in.s, 'well-appointed ' writing-rooms, aiid generally the' Palace is designed to. meet the requirements of those people looking for comfortable, convenient, 1 and central lodgings, not, connected : with a liquor license.' This' fine 1 building, with : its' '' handsome red. pressed brick 1 front elevation and glittering, cupola', should become a not- ■ able landmark • in Wellington.- It' te being : .erected by Messrs; James Trevor and Sons 1 lroni the plans, of Mr. J. C. Maddison. Mr. .Umpben Colquhoun. is : cler ; kof works: 1 hose old wooden premises'-next to tha Gear .Meat Company's shop', in Cuba' Street, ' which have been occupied by Mr. N. Fernandez and Messrs; liosie' and. Bell 1 are, to' .make. way for. a handsome brick building,■ consisting of four stories and a . basement, ' which is to be 'erected by : Mr. Browman for the, Cuba Street .Land and'lnvestment Com-.' pair at a-cost.of about £7000. Mr. Maddison has in hand'in the rosidenee that .is being/crccted for Mrs. bcddon (widow of the late: Premier), on-Gold-cr s Hill, which is being .built 'by day labour at a cost of over £3000. A'; magnificent residence is being built- at' Rata for Mrs. John' Hammond, at-a cost-: of £10.000. It is to he an extremely picturesque house,' built in wood, on a combination of the • Swiss: an* American plan—with quaint gables, • over- , hanging e«iyes; exterior beams,'and an ornamental belfry. The building will occupy a section of land 140 ft. by i 120 ft., and will - contain a large billiard' room, and a dining and drawing room' separated by folding doors, ',' : lc '' » n , folded ' back -.will form an apartment ,2ft, by f 3oft. Mr. Maddison.has also : designed new, brick Premises (shop and bakehouses) for Mr. P. ;)! Ifnaiid, to be erected -at the corner, of laranaki and Arthur Streets at-a cost 'of about £1500. }Ir.,F. M'Parland,. sen., is contemplating • soveral , structural improvements to the Hotel Cecil that are calculated to improve that, popular hostelry.
