MINIATURE RIFLE RANGES.
DISCUSSION BY THE EDUCATION BOARD. At -yesterday's meeting of the Education Board a circular from'tho Government was read, in which it was intimated that a subsidy of £ for £, up to £50, would bo granted to schools in Which it was desired to erect miniaturo rifle ranges. Captain T. W.
M'Donald said that this was one of-the most important matters that, had been brought beforo tho Board for some time. Ho hoped tho Board would'recogniso the value of a tiling like this. Referring; to the'construction' of ranges in the city schools, 'lib foresaw' considerable expense if the thing were to bo done properly;. and ho would suggest that for schools in Wellington, and tho larger towns, tho sub-target machine should bo used. The sub-target machine vras self-registering, and while affording precisely the snmo advantages as regards instruction and prnctico, could bo made peripatetic, and taken from ono school to another. Tho cost was about £100. The Chairman (Mr. Lee) observed that lie was particularly ; pleased with the Government's attitude ill tho matter. ' 'It was. finally. decided, on tho motion of Captain M'Donald, seconded by Mr. William Allan, "That the Board express to.tho Government its appreciation of tho latter's offer to subsidise. tho construction of miniature rifle ranges for public schools, up to £50, and recommends for the consideration of tho Department the advisabloncss of purchasing sub target machines, in lieu of miniature ranges, for citics; and larger •ixnvns, as such machines would bo loss, oxponsivo aiid more cfFcctive."
