She lias had a new crank shaft fitted, and will be docked for cleaning and painting before tilling, about the end of the week, for the Bluff and northern ports.
Mr. George Salt, late of the s.s. Arava, has talcLMi the position of chicf steward of tho s.s. llotomahana, in (he ptaco of Mr. A. C. Mitcliolsoi!, who has been appointed chief steward of the s.s. Mokoia. . Mr. Lidiard, who went to Auckland as mate of the Baden-Powell, has returned to.Wellington. He reports that since the vessel has been fitted with another hold, she can carry an extra 44 tons of coal, bringing her capacity up to between 220 and 230 tons. The vessel is also rigged up for log towing. During the quarter ended September 30 the arrival of vessels at Newcastle (N.S.W.) totalled 1277, and the departures 1303. The Paten Shipping Company's steamer Kapiti was reported to have gone ashore at that port yesterday. An offort to refloat her was to have been made last night. Hie vessel was making no water yesterday, anil when refloated it is expected she will proceed to Wellington and go on the slip. There is a probability of the Tastnan calling at Port Hardy on the way to Kelson to-day. Owing to the late arrival of tho s.s. Witnmera, and tho quantity of cargo to be handled at Wellington, her departure l'or Melbourne via .southern ports is unavoidably postponed to 4 p.m. on Friday. According to an exchange an extensive survey of the north and north-wost coast of Australia is being carried out by 11.M.5. Pantomo, and two hitherto uncharted submerged rooks have been discovered. The first one loeated was situated at 10 degrees 59 minutes south and 133 degrees 14 minutes east, about 230 miles from the coast, and in the vicinity of Timor Tsland. The other one is much nearer the mainland, being close to itorey's Shoal, a few miles away from the extremo north of Northern Territory, at 11 degrees 38 minutes south, and 123 degrees east. It is also reported that a highly magnetic submersed rock has been discovered close to tho north-west coast.' It i 8 said that there are only two or three such: rocks charted in the world. We understand (says the "Otago Daily Times") that although the first and second saloon fares from Australia to London have been increased ten per cent, by the Australian shipping companies, a similar rise has not yet taken effect oil the direct lines from New Zealand. Meanwhile the old rates are.still being charged by the companies controlling the latter vessels", but it is quite on, the cards that a similav increase in fares may come about at any time, and passencers booking previous to th'.s announcement will profit to that extent.; The steel barque Dunregsan, of Glasgow, has been sold to a Liverpool firm. The barque is 1477 tons register, and was built by tho Ailsa Shipbuilding Company, Troon, for Messrs. Guthrie, Mncdonnlu, flood, and Co., in 1592. The price paid for the vessel is said to. be £8000. The Whakarua will be detained longer than was expected at Napier, owing., to to-day being a publio holiday in that town. She is clue to arrive here on Saturday. METEOROLOGICAL. .
