The Turakina.
PROGRESS OF UNLOADING OPERATIONS. It is a long time since "No. 1 South, ' as tho berth occupied by the Turakina' at tho Queen's Wharf is called, has presented so lively a scene as during tho past day or two. The Turakina and her firo havo made the biggest maritime sonsation in this port for some years, and the public havo turned up in thousands to gazo at the slowly-rising bow of tho big cargo-carrier and tho active discharge of sodden bales and shrouded carcases disappointed of their, trip Homo. ' An endless procession of lorries has been trekking from tho wharf to several points of the compass with great stacks of products fed by the hardy crew of lumpers working strenuously in tho capacious steamer. That these men havo worked well, the lift of tho steamor forward is proof, and tho statement that No. 2 hold (containing dairy produce, rabbits, and mutton) is expected to bo emptied by noon to-day is to their credit. To savo partage tho Turakina will be movcu ovor to the Glasgow Wharf at 5 o'clock this morning, so that the balanco or her meat cargo may bo transferred direct to tho railway trucks that can bo run into tho Gear Meat Company's works at Potono. The rabbits (12,500 crates) will thoro be put through tho digostor and returned to tho market as " the best animal manure." This portion of tho cargo tho Gear Company acquired for the price of tho handling, cartage, and railage to the works. Tho wool, which is being dealt with by Messrs. M. F. Boiirko and Co., is being shipped to Napier, whore the firm has a fiiio scouring and re-conditioning outfit. Tho Kaliu left for Napier on Monday night with 342 bales, and tho Stormbird followed at a lato hour last night with another 350 bales. No dato has yet been fixed for the inquiry, which will commence some time next weoi.
