On tho occasion of his approaching marriago, Mr. A. Simm, accountant to Mr. A. E. Kernot, was presented by the latter with a handsome caso of cutlery and by tho staff with dinner and tea services. His Excellency, Lord Plunket, has signified his intention of boing present at the dedication and consecration of tho now Masonic Lodge in Martinborough on Octogor 31, in his capacity as Most Worshipful the Grand Master of New Zealand. . \ Mr. Arthur A. Smith, an old.resident of Christchurch, died in that city on Sunday last. Ho arrived at Lyttolton in the ship Roman Empire in 1860, and subsequently joined the police force, being placed in charge of the gaol and branch immigration depot. Ho was 76 years of age and leaves a widow and family of seven sons and one daughter. One of tho sons, Mr. Harry Smith, is connected with tho firm of Turnbull and Jones of this city. The Rev. R. S. Gray, of Christchurch, secretary of ' tho Baptist Union of Now Zealand, has had a serious breakdown in health,' and has been ordered to take three months' complete rest. - The funeral of tho lato Mr. John Buckley, formerly of H.M. 65th Regiment, took place at Auckland on Friday last. Tho deceased veteran was 77 years of age. He was a native of Cork, Ireland. Ho had served in tho Tnranaki and Waikato campaigns and was awarded a New Zealand medal. Tho Rov. Gerard 1 W. Davidson, vicar of Balclutha, has accepted the position of assistant curate in this parish to the Rev. C. C. Harpor (states the "Manawatu Daily Times"). He will take up his duties in January, 1908. .Mr. Davidson is very 'highly recommended by thoso who know him.' Ho has been in Holy Orders for nine years, having been ordained deacon in 189S and priest in 1901. Ho lias been in chargo of Balclutha for three years, and is now desirous of moving to tho North Island, and gaining the experience of a larger work than he has been engaged in. The Rev. L. Thompson, of North Taieri, brother of tho Rev. A. T. Thbmp--son, of Masterton, has accepted a call to St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Carterton. Mr. Jas. S. Fleming, youngest son of ,the late Mr. J. S. Fleming and brother of Mr. T. R. Fleming, Inspector of Schools, was married yesterday. afternoon to' Miss Louie Muir, youngest daughter of Mr. James. ;Muir. The coremony, which took.place at tho residence of tho bride's parents in Marjonbanks Street, was performed by : tho Rev. James Paterson. The bride was given away by her father. Mr. Jack Fleming acted as best man, and Miss Kathleen Muir, niece of the bride, was bridesmaid." iA largo number of pre--sents were received, including one from the. bridegroom's fellow-employees in Messrs. Turnbull and Jones' establishment. Lady Plunket, who, as one of tho honorary Colonels, is to inspect tho North Canterbury Mounted Rifles on Friday at Culverden, left for the South last evening. She was accompanied by tho Hon. athleen Plunket and Lieu-1 tenant Lyon, A.D.C.
