The hard-faced mermaid oil the cover j of the Christmas number of "The Weekly Press," who "would not bo ! kissed by all that would list,'' would not be ill danger of being 'kissed bymany, despite her resplendent tail. Ths "purplo twilights of the sea," however, in which the bashful lady disports herself, are very naturally and effectively reproduced, and the cntiro colour i scheme is admirable. Three supplements are included with this Christmas number—a coloured reproduction of Mr. W. Henries Gibbs's picture, "The Wharves, Wellington," ail excellent reproductiou in two printings of a clever photograph by Mr. Charles M. Phillips. "Three Little Maids from Maoriland," and a third line example of duple' printing, entitled ."A Piece of Wedgewood." These, and the contents of the number itself, are worthy of the highest praiso. The Humorous -illustrations arc remark- • ably successful, efforts of engraving, and n the'so pages of reading matter will please • most tastes. Place of honour is given j to an admirable article on the Southern ! Alps, being an account of some, first ascents at the.head of the Fox Glacier, in South Westland, by the Eov. 11. li Newton. Two l'ull-pago views of ths famous glacier, of the author's photographs, achievo a quite unusual sharpness of outline, and could hardly be surpassed. Full-page views of Nharuahoo from the Wnihoiionu, and . Bella Peak from ,the j\tilford-Te I Auau track,' are equally to. Ve commended, anil Mr. Charles. M. Phillips's futhful Maori studies are an important feature. The graceful setting of tho smaller illustrations greatly eui hnnces their appoaraii'ce. There are hi,173 married women between the ages' of fifteen and fnrty-flvo in tho City of Westminster., The unmarried and widows of the same ages i number 38,80, 1 ' '
