INQUEST AT PALMERSTON. [by tei,eqeaph.—own correspondent.] - Palmerston, Oct. 3. At tho inquest to-day concerning tho death-of the man Christensen, a verdict was returned that death whs duo to a gunshot wound in 'tho head, solf-inflicted whilo of an unsound mind. ELDERLY MAN'S SHOCKING DEATH. Auckland, October 4. Honry Noton, an elderly man, who resided with Mr., and Mrs. Douglas in Tonsonby, met his death'last night undor shocking circumstances. Noton. who was 65 years old, had suffered from dropsy. Last uight he v.-as visited by several relatives, and at about two o'clock this morning Mrs. Douglas heard a noise, and found Notori's room/ full of smoke, and Noton prono on tho hearth,, with his head, m tho firo. Medical aid was promptly obtained, but death had supervened. Tho deceased had ovidontly been seized with sudden faintness when sitting .before tho firo. SHOT IN A PADDOCK, i - Core, October 4. John Gouk, aged about '13, a single man. was found dead, having apparently shot himself in a paddock at Morino Downs" last evoning. Ho hnd ■not been seen sinco September 30. The face was badly wounded. Tho deceased was ono of tho fivo mombers of tho Fourth Contingent whoso expenses wore paid by tho Hon. It. M'Nab.
