The French steamer St. Louis arrived from Noumea to-day, after an exciting experience. She .set out with an old French warship, the Meurthe;. in ,tow for Sydney. On arrival hero it was intended to break, the old war vessel up. .Very heavy weather came on after leaving Noumea, and it was found ■necessary to lengthen , tho tow lino. -While that operation was proceeding, the chain snapped, and struck and killed one of the crew aboard tho Meurtho, named Capon. The weather gradually grow worse, and ultimately the . men on the Meurthe signalled that they were leaving the vessel. At groat risk thoy put off in a boat, and got aboard the St. Louis, although tho- -boat was smashed in the attempt. , • Tho. Meurthe had sprung a leak, and was settling down. The tow ropo was cast off, and tho vessel was abandoned in latitudo 29 dog. 16 min. south, longtitudo 157 east. She was then almost level with the water's edge."
