FISHING SEASON.

Sotno Very fair baskets aro reported to-day in connection with tho opening of the fishing season. One angler was responsible for a catch of fifteen in tho Waipoua River. The heaviest was about a pound aiid a half, and all were in excellent condition. There have been liberated from the loca) hatcheries in the \Vairarapa, Bush and Hawke's Bay' districts so far fully 400,000 fry, and another 300,000 will bo distributed in tho same area during tho next six weeks. Owing to tho splondid rainfall tho season's prospects have never been better. ]ft : ith referonce to baskets tho recent Government enactment prohibiting catchbs of more than 20 pounds is considored as a set-back to .many an imaginative fisherman, whoso "records" have constituted town gossip for'perhaps a number of years. -

The weather was not very propitious for tho opening of the anging season to-day, a cold easterly blowing during the greater part of the day, consequently a number of anglers who went out of town to try their luck havo not yet returned as tlioy would havo dono if their baskets had been full. In the Avon, which often yields good sport for the first few days of tho season, one angler caught 55, but none of any great size.-
