Furniture Trade Usiloii.
A deputation representing tho, Furniture Trade Employees Union waited on the Minister, for Labour (the Hon. J. A. Millar) last evening, to suggest certain alterations in the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Amendment Bill. Approval, as a whole, was expressed with . the ineasure._. It .was pointed 'out in regard to industrial councils that thero should'bo one for each branch of the trade. One set of men would bo unable to know all the various branches. The Minister said the intention was to prevent delay!!, but if the proposals would not work, he would be pleased to consider the suggestion made. The outstanding idea was to get men and masters together. In reply to a further question, the Minister said thnt under the Bill an award would apply to the whole district iu which" it was made, whether citation in every case had been made or not. It was painted out by the deputation .tlint under the old Act one emplovor could upset an award, and the Minister said he would consider a suggestion that where there was no union of employers lie would accept a majority. The deputation also asked that the Onions should have the right of granting " permits." The workers were the men best capable of judging of the capabilities of thosj they'worked with. The Minister pointed out that as Conciliation Boards would be done away with and machinery altered, ii was proposed to substitute an Inspector for the Chairman of the Conciliation Board. He, however, noted a suggestion to substitute the magistrate of the court for the inspector. Other features of the Bill were also explained by the Minister at tho desire of the deputation'.
