Government has decided to pay tho Japaneso 6000 dollars as compensation for damages sustained in connection with tho recent riots iii Vancouver. Tokio, October 1. Tho Hon. Mr. Taft, United States Secretary for War, who is tho bearer of a friendly greoting to Japan, was ontertained at a banquet here. During his speech ho declared that tho San Francisco affair could bo fully and honourably adjusted. Mr. Tnft added that both Governments would strain every nerve to prevent a conflict.' America's goodwill towards Japan was as cordial as ever. New York, October 1. Many Amorican newspapers arc endeavouring to provoko war with Japan. They allege that President Roosevelt is favourable to war. ANGLO-RUSSIAN TREATY.' JAPAN APPROVES., - Tokio, October 1. Japanese statesmen and nowspapors are delighted at the Anglo-Russian Convention, : which considerably lightens Japanese responsibility -u connection with' the defence of the frontier. Japanese newspapers state that Count Okuma believes that an unpublished understanding exists between Great Britain and Russia regarding the Balkans and Asia Minor.
