THE GAOL PETITIONS.
Observer,
To the Editor of the Cromwell Argus,
In an "extra" issued on the 4th by the Dunstan Times, a copy of a telegram from Mr James Hazlett is given, in which he says he signed the petition re essab ishment of a. District Court and Caol in Cromwell, " without looking at it." Whether this version is correct or nos I cannot say; but 1 think anyone who knows Mr Hazlett will give him credit for more wisdom than to sign any document " without, looking at it." I was requested by the Corporation of Cromwell to obtain signatures to the said petition. I called upon Mr Hazlett and asked him for his autograph, and handed him the document for perusal He at first demurred, and told Ae
that sittings were sure to he held in Cromwell. T remarked that was all very well, but T thought the importance of Cromwell and its large con. tributions to the revenue gave it superior claims over Clyde to have the vote expended here, and as he waa now partially resident and had estab* liabed hia business in Cromwell, it would look graceful on his part to support the application for the expenditure of the vote in the lattor plaice. He thereupon attached his name, as I imagined with a full understanding of what he was doing, and if he now repudiates the act, he displays—well, inconsistency.—l am, &c, Cromwell, June 8, 1875.
