William Jeffrey, husband of the woman who recently met her death in Dunedin at the hands of a seaman named Crossan, died in the hospital on Friday last. Ho had been drinking heavily for some time. '
Lurline and Calumny have turned out grand mares on the Australian turf, after all. The former is regarded by many sporting men as the best mare all round, as she is undoubtedly the finest to look at that ever stripped on Elemington racecourse. I suppose her market value would be a thousand guineas this minute.* No doubt she will go to the stud, where she will be unmatched in New South Wales or Victoria.
The Charleston Herald (West Coast) announces the demise of the local Road Board in an obituary notice thus ;—“ Died.—On the sth instant, at its temporary residence, Camp-street, Charleston, after a lingering illness, shrank into ignoble silence from a malignant attack of metempsychosis, the dearly-beloved Institution, the Local Revenues Board, natural progeny of Oswald Curtis, Esq., of Nelson.”
