REPLY, TO "SHARETTOLDER."

To the Editor of the Cromwell' Argus. Sin.—A letter appeared in your last week's issue regarding the appointment of a Working Manager of the Carrick Water Race, to wh ch it is desirable, for one reason alone, that J should make some reply. The one- reason is, that silence on my p.irt might be construed into an idnrssion that the st;.ifcmcnts contained in :.ho letter referred to were true, and admitted of neither denial nor qualification. After Mr Marshall's resignation of the office of Working Manager had been accepted, Mr Griffiths informed me that he would be willing to take the office upon himself, and L then promised him my support in the event of the Directors filling up the vacancy from among those pei sonally known to them as being lit for the office ami willing to take it. When the vacancy came to be considered, however, by the Directors, it was determined to advert.se for applications through the U omwell Argus and the Mount Ida Chronicle. This course produced about sixteen or seventeen applications, and I then took an opportunity of telling Mr Griffiths that I should support the person who appeared to me best qualified and who would give most satisfaction +o the great body of shareholders. I accordingly supported the appointment of Mr Yarce, of St. Bathans, who is not only favourably known to myself personally, but of whom the Directors had the highest testimonials from a very iai ge and influential section of the shareholders. In further justification lif it is requiied) of my personal support to Mr Varcoe's appointment, I may state that I hold a general proxy to n present (including my own) about 1400 shares, anil ihat by many of the holders of these shares, Mr Varcoe was very strongly recommended. To prevent any quesfion being raised upon this latter point, 1 may say that the holders of these shares are : Wm Pyle, St Bathans, 200 shares ; George Burton, do , 200; T. Rowe, do, 25 ; Mary Smith, do., 50 ; T. Mulvey, do., 25 ; C. Quinlan, do., 25; A. Tiernay, do., lOOj.James Dun din, 50; Georie Tomes, do., 50; H. Ai ken, do., 50 ; C. Brad, do., 100 ; T. Fargie, do., 100; George Smith, carrier, 50; F. Chase, Oamaru. 100 ; J. Y. Henry, Clyde, 50.

Sir, I have no time to enter into a discussion with any anonymous scribbler, even \f he be a shareholder, as to the extent of the Carrkk Kange Water Company's undertaking and the benefit it will do the district, &c., &c. I sometimes think, considering the suppoit the Company has had from the Bannockhurn district that if anything I have been a little over-z»alous in advocating its in f erests. "Shareholder" can now take a turn at that bort of thing. In opposition to one statement of his 1 will say that I believe the appointment has given general satisfaction.

The uext time " Shareholdei" has any complaint to make of the doings of the Direotois, and I will at once admit that he has a perfect right to criiicise their actions, I would advi-.e him to do so at a general meeting of the Company, or to sign any letter he may wiite to the

n/us. If ho choos' sto write in preference. I would advise him to date his letter from a different place to the Ramiockliurn. The shareholders there are unfortunately so few, and their o»>i. nious so well known, that if "Shareholders" letter did not " lay ic on so thick'' to Mr Griflhhs, one acqu tinted with the Register of Shareholders w./tnd say it had been written by Mr Griffiths himself.—l am, &c., James Taylor, Chairman, U.R.W.S. Company.
