I A Chinaman died in a house in Staffordstreet yesterday morning from an overdose of opium. He was a partner in the firm of Sun War On, merchants. At inquest yes* terday, the verdict returned was that he poisoned'himself while in a state of temporary insanity. The Rangatira, with the Auckland cricketers, arrived on Sunday night. The match was commenced yesterday morning. Otago went in first. Otago (second innings): Meares 0, Thomson 10, Rhodes 0, Lambert 0, Allen 4, Macdonnell 8, Macfarlan 2, Clarke 6, Garwood 2, leg-bye 1. Seven Otago men were thus out for 33 runs. Play will bo resumed this 'morning at ten. A London telegram brought by the Albion on Saturday was to the effect that a panic was expected on the Stock Exchange, that great alarm pervaded all classes, and that the Bank of England rate of discount was nine per' cent, and expected to increase to ten. The Daily Times of yesterday considers the telegram a great exaggeration. The latest Argm and Age Reuter telegrams contain nothing to justify the Melbourne compiler in sending such a sensational message. LATER. Auckland won match with four wickets to spare. Otago's score in second innings was forty-two.
