QUARTZ MINIM MEMORANDA.

' BENDIGO. The Cromwell Quartz Mining Company finished a crushing on Friday last of 110 tons, with a result of 318 ounces. The same description of stone is being raised still at No. 1 shaft, but in No. 2 the men are employed sinking. The latter is down about 100 feet, through payable enough stuff, but has not yet reached the richer lot which is being taken from No. 1. The company will be able to have two or three more crushings with an equally,, good result before Christmas. Speaking without any pretensions to absolute certainty, the three shares in this company cannot have paid their fortunate possessors much less than the handsome sum of £2OOO a piece for the last twelve months ; and this, be it remembered, in the face of the stoppage which the company experienced last summer for nearly six months, on account of the scai'city of water and the break-down of the water-wheel. The directors and manager of the "Reliance Quartz Mining Company inspected the claim on Saturday last. They found the shaft had been trimmed and put in good working order, and had been sunk to the depth of about seventy feet. They were highly satisfied with the progress which had been made. At the bottom of the shaft, (which is sunk within ten feet of the Cromwell Co.'s boundary,) the reef, which was reported last week as being between eighteen inches and two feet wide, has widened out to about thirty inches. No gold can be seen in the stone, but the directors were satisfied that it is a continuation of the Cromwell Co.'s lode. When a further distance of ten or fifteen feet has been sunk, it is probable that a trial of the stuff will be made. Within the last six or seven feet of the sinking, the reef has begun to dip towards the north a good deal. Mr Colclough reports that the Luclcnow mine " was visited on Thursday last by some of the shareholders, and was thoroughly inspected, with the view of preparing a report to be laid before the half-yearly meeting on the 10th proximo. The water has subsided some twenty feet in the workings, shewing that the tunnel is draining the ground. The tunnel is now in 325 feet, and a change in the rook is anxiously looked for. 1 might place a strong adjective this week before the usual report of the quality of the stone, were it not that sora v i little indications of a change present themselves."
