MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
Tho third meeting of the Council was held * on Thursday evening, 11th inst. There were t present, - the Mayor, Mr Fraer, and Conn- f cillors Dawkins, Grant, Shanly, Hayes, and c Pierce. The meeting was opened punctually j at 8 o’clock. ] The minutes of last'general meeting were * read and confirmed. ’ . CORRESPONDENCE, , Inward correspondence was read. It con* sisted of letters from District Surveyor in re 1 map of the township furnished by him, and offering to furnish plan of permanent levels as required for the sum of £42 2s. ; from Chief Postmaster, Dunedin, acceding to request of the Town Council in the matter of * the mail service ; from the Commissioner of , Police in re the appointment of Inspector of ; Nuisances and Collector of Taxes ; and from ‘ C. Colclough, resigning his position as Auditor. There were also two tenders received, one for painting, and one for fencing-in the Town-hall. It was ordered that the District Surveyor’s letter stand over for further consideration ;, that the letters from Commissioner of Police ■ and Chief Postmaster be suitably acknowledged ; and that the resignation of C. Colclough, as auditor, be accepted, and proper steps taken to elect his successor. The Townclerk Was also requested to write the Mayors of Queenstown, Naseby, and Lawrence in the matter of the mail service; and to ask the Chief Postmaster to change the postal name of the town from Kawarau Junction to Cromwell. A draft memorial to his Honor the Superintendent in re the lessening the width of the main street was then read and approved of. It was ordered to be prepared and forwarded. ACCOUNTS. Accounts from W. Ward (race), R. Inglis (gravelling), the Auditors, and Matthews and Fenwick (printing), were passed for payment. E. Lindsay’s was ordered to he referred to Public Works Committee. W. Stewart’s account for £2B 10s. was passed provisionally, TENDERS. Mr K. Prctsch’s tender for painting Townhall was accepted : amount, £5 Bs. Mr W. Stewart’s tender for fencing-in Town-hall was accepted : amount, £l7. RETORT. The Finance and Legislative Committees were not prepared with their report - on'--the bye-laws. They, however, reported that they had obtained copies of the bye-laws in force in several other Municipalities, and would be prepared to fully report at next meeting. POSTPONEMENT OF MOTION. By permission of the Council, Cr. Dawkins was allowed to postpone his motion regarding tho keeping of pigs in the township, of which notice was given at last meeting, till next meeting. The usual vote of thanks concluded the proceedings.
