We had made arrangements to receive a report of the above races, which took place on Monday and Tuesday, Mar. 17 and 18, in time for this week’s issue ; but owing to some unexplained cause the report has not yet come to hand. Wo are indebted for the following particulars to the Arrow Observer : FIRST DAY. Maiden Plate of 10 sovs. Distance, one nfle. Weight for age. Mr Caley’s Caller-ou (Laitig) 1 Mr Tuohy’s Matilda ... (Allen) 2 Mr Miller’s Teddy Regan ... (J. Colville) 3 There also ran four others. Tliis was a good race between the first three, the rest being nowhere. Time, two minutes. District Handicap of 15 sovs. Distance, one mile and a half. Open to horses the property of persons residing within 20 miles of Cardrona township Mr M'Oallum’s Governor, 9st 101b ... (Ewing) 1 Mr Wallace’s Boomerang, 9st lib ...(M'Giiire) 2 Merry thought and Monarch also ran. Cardrona was scratched, and Merrythought and Monarch bolted after going a mile, the race then being a gift to Governor. Town Plate of 15 sovs. Distance, one mile and a hair. Weight for age. Mr Fraser’s Madam, aged (Laing) 1 Mr Bond’s Cardrona, 3 yrs (Evans) 2 Mr Tuoliy’s Hawea, 4 yrs ... ... (Ewing) 3 Caley’s Caller-ou and D mglas’s Wild Rose also ran. Colville) 1 Mr M'Allister’s Stanley (Allen) 2 Eclipse and Tommy also ran. - . . • SECOND DAY. Miners’ Race : Ist prize, 7 sovs. ; 2nd do., 3 sovs. Distance, one mile. No weight less than l()st. , i_ Mr C-dey’s Callor-ou (J. Colville) 1 Mr Miller’s Teddy Regan (Russell) 2 Mr Ryley’s Eclipse (M‘Gibbon) 3 This was a well-contested race from the start, Caller-ou winning by a length, hard pressed by Teddy, Eclipse being nowhere. Time, two minutes. Cardrona Handicap of 30 sovs. Distance, two Hides. Open, to all horses. Mr Fraser’s Madam, 9st .(Laing) 1 Mr Bond’s Cardrona, Bst 4lb ...(Ballantyne) 2 Merry thought, Jenny, and Monarch ran. Tliis being the groat event of the meeting, there was much excitement over it. Merrythought and Madam were favourites. After the start, Merry thought took a strong lead, which lie maintain--d for a mile and a half, when, being hard pressed by Madam, he ran off the course, and thus lost all chance of the race. There were nine nominations for this Handicap, four being withdrawn. The time was 3min. 45sec. Shorts ;£7 10s. Half-mile heats without dismounting. No weight less than lOst. Mr Bon I’s Cardrona, Bst (Ballantyne) 1 Mr Miller’s Teddy Regan, 7st 101b... ((’otter) 2 Mr Tuohy’s Matilda. 7st 7!b (Evans) 3 Monarch and Merrythought also ran. Merrythought and Monarch again ran off the course. Toddy took the lead until coming up the straight, when Cardrona challenge:! him, and came to the post a length and a half in advance, Matilda a good third. A School Race was got up, for which £lO 6» was subscribed, the rider of the winner io bo presented with a guinea or a riding-whip. Won by Mr Tome’s Monarch. Tho weather throughout tho meeting was all that could bo desired. Athletic sports on ; both days were well contested, and helped to 1 render the meeting quite as enjoyable, if not, i more so, than many of greater pretensions.
