Chamberlain, the Hokitika burglar, who had formed an underground passage between his own house and the store he was in the habit of robbing, has been sentenced to ten years' penal servitude. Great discussion is going on in Germany as to the devising of means to put a stop to emigration. A law has been passed to punish all who persuade persons to emigrate. Freight lias been carried on the Port Chalmers railway from Burke's brewery to the Port, —nearly half the whole distance of the line.
