CORRESPONDENCE.
THE OTAGO POLICE FORCE. To (ha fclitov of the ( 'k >m vVki.l A kous. Sin,—A verv well timed and deserved phillipic appealed in your journal a week or two ago. In addition to the grievances therein ex nosed, I wish to call public attention to ilie fact that the Government does not pay the policemen their salaries ivhh anything like punctuality ; hut at the same time it requires constables to go mi active duty while their pay is in arrear. By " active" duty i mean long journevs, involving expenses at hotels for nun ana horse, wnieu (although partly allowed for afterv, T a.\ls) are a loss to the eoiutahlj, because a pdue oincer has t.i pay as much for what he ;e s as a Prime Minister has, and unless a policeman gets his pay, it is ve:'v unfair that he should lie expected to provide his travelling expenses in advance. The least the (Jovernment could do in all hmieaty would he to make some arrangement whereby constables on travel who have not been nail their salaries might be saved from annoyance 1 am, &c, A Fkik.nl> of Tilt; i'\n<_v:.
