The next Popular Entertainment will take place ou Thursday, tlie 31st iust. We understand that the "Cromwell Christy Minstrels" will perform on that occasion. It is also anticipated that Mr Pyke will deliver a popular lecture.
Mr John Marsh has, we regret to state, been the subject of a slight attack of a paralytic character. We are glad to learn that ho is recovering, under the care of Dr Corse. There i 3 I a considerable amount of sickness prevalent ill the town and district just now.
We are glad to notice that some steps are to be taken, consequent on the late melancholy death iu the Christchurch gaol, to obviate the recurrence of such a disaster. In the Canterbury Provincial Council, Mr P. H. M. Walker gave notice of motion that in the opinion of the Council some proper place at the Hospital should be provided for persons committed by the Resident Magistrate labouring under detij'ium tremcit.. This may well be imitated in Otago.
A schoolmistress is ranch needed for the Cromwell District School. We observe that £SO has been voted for a schoolmistress for the Mount Ida District School. Parents of children in this town would do well to take similar action. " Grove Farm,'' about two miles from Cromwell, the residence of Mr John Towan, is well worth a visit. It is a verdant spot in the midst of an arid Flat, —an oasis iu an otherwise treeless desert. In the short space of two years Mr Towan has wonderfully improved his land, and has now rather extensive f.uit and vegetable gardens. He hopes before long to be in a position to supply the townspeople with fruit and vegetables. The want of irrigation is the great difficulty he has to contend against.

An examination of the vouchers would be most instructive. Mr Lews ! ponder over this. " The Evangelist " for this month is up to the average. The inauguration of the Otago University is the subject of an excellent article. The " Educational Discussion " and Dr Moran's priestly pranks are fairly reviewed. There is an appeal on behalf of the mission vessel Dayspring. 'J he Chinese missionary at Lawrence appears to be labouring successfully among his heathenish fellow-countrymen,— still a mild protest is entered against the increasing influx of Chinese. The learned Editor (the Rev. Dr. Copland) has received an unanimous call to the pastorate of the North Dunedin Presbyterian Church—a post which he is eminently qualified to fill.
The Session of the General Assembly con - menced in Wellington yesterday. The following Bankruptcy Act Notices aro published :—.John Hdliday, storekeeper, Baimockburn. Filed, July 24th. William Williams, fanner, Leaning Rock District, Clyde. Filed, August 4th. Mr W. W. Wilson is solicitor in both cases. A letter from our Bendigo correspondent was unfortunately delayed in transmission, and reached us too late for publication this week. We direct attention to the advertisements of W. Shaiily and Co., and Jolly and Co. Advertising is the life of trade'
The following list of unclaimed letters ying at the Baimoekburn Post-office on the 14th August current, his been handed to us by Mr J. Halliday, the district postmaster : —Donald Finlaysou, 3 ; John Scott, 1 5 Miss Speechley, 1 ; George Smith, 1 ; George Robinson, 1 ; and Goorge Chitty, 1. Mr R. E. Field has basil appointed fteg&trar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages for the Arrow District. "The exceedingly rnild weather" appears had an extraordinary effect upou the tyjt* graphic artists at the office of that melancjfeiy advertising medium the lhmstan Times. Its columns, from week to week, bristle with errors, and are laden with mistakes of all kinds. A duly-qualified corrector-of-the-press would, we should imagine, be a useful acquisition to tk« little wayside village of Clyde. In the issue of the 11th inst., the following! blundering paragraph appeared in the Time*. It is so intensely stupid that it deserves to be rescued from oblivion : "The exceedingly mild weather lately prevailing has hastened the development of spring regulation. In many gardens trees and shrubs are rapidly budding. In Mrs Pyke's well sheltered grounds peach trees may be seen inleaf, and strawberries actually in blossom." The Cromwell correspondent of the Bail]] Times writes :—"The increased value of building allotments must be very gratifying t) the jwor bat honest freeholders in Cromwell, and they are certainly much obliged to the Waste Land Board for the handsome valuation they put on the piece of land adjoining Mr Marsh's Hotel. [n round numbers, tbeir valuation puts the land at the rate of £2OOO per acre. I declare I feel a thrill of joy at the thought of being a £4OOO man myself, being, as I am, the fortunate possessor of about two and a-quarter acres. £2OOO an acre! Why, if the Government will only persuade the \Vaste Land Board to re-consider Mr G. \V. Goodger's late application to purchase twenty acre.3, and value it at the same figure, they may get rid of their liabilities at once. What principle settles these valuations ? A few months ago £2OO an acre was the upset price of ;i. suction right opposite to the one now in question." Tliß following is a return of lands and their classes in the Province of Otago (excluding Southland) on the 3lst March, IS7I :—Forest, 1,421,00!) acres; lakes, 234,800 acres; barren, 2,348,24'J acres ; agricultural and pastoral, 9,303,600 acres. Total area of Otago, 13,330.010 acres. Area under pastoral leases, 6,131,014 acres; area uuler pastoral licenses, 310,500 ;ieres ; area Wider agricultural lease 3, 50,792 acres; area sold within htmlrods, 1,035,(520 acres; area sold within goldfields, 4323 aires ; area sold within goldfields previously held 11 nilur agricultural leases, 3203 acres ; area unsold within hundreds, 338,730 acres ; area of hundreds, 1,424,400 acres. Included in the sold an I within hundreds are 63,0.10 acres of forest, an I 21,000 acres of swamp. Ot the unsold lands within hundreds there are about 80,000 acres of agricultural land ; 100,000 aires of forest ; 4 KM acres of swamp ; and 235,000 acres of hilly, pistoral, and inferior lands. The election of a Councillor for Like Ward, Q.iOJiistowu, on Satur !a ', r suited in the' r.:rurn of Mr Beits, who be it his opponent (Mr Powell) by 14 votes.
fchles of Town Lands will take place at Qiieeustown, on tlie !4fch inst., at noon, the allotments bsinj sitnatcj-.l at Kingston, Frankton, Ulotiorcky, Ivinlooh, and in Queenstown. On the lGthyi land sale will be lial I at Arrowtown. (tii tho 15th an.l 16th at Alexandra and Clyde. On the 17th and 18th inst. land sabs will be held in Cromwell (town lots), and at Beadigo. Block 1., Lower II awe i District, (230G acres), will be offered for sale by Mr Chappie, at Clyde, on the ISih insi.--upset price, £1 per acre. The selection of Clyde as the place of sale is a most stupid and improper proceeding on the part of the Government.
