THE Cromwell Argus. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17, 1870.
The entertainment to be given at Kidd's Hall to-night, for the benefit of the Dnnstan District Hospital, is certain to draw a crowded attendance. The exhibition of dissolving views is in itself a very powerful attraction ; and when we state tiiat every effort is being made to render the performance of “ Box and Cox ” a successful one, we think that a pleasant evening’s amusement may safely be guaranteed. The Town Council of Cromwell recently wrote to the Provincial Government, requesting that a reserve of hfty acres might be set apart as a public park for the use of the inhabitants, and there is reason to believe thit the request will shortly be c nnplie I with. We understand that the Mayor and Council have succeeded in making an amicable arrangement with Messrs Hayes (late Counollan) and party in regard to the arrears due for rent for rent of water-race. A fresh agreement is to be entered into respecting the future supply, and we believe it has been arranged that Messrs Hayes and party arc to allow ten inches (or onefourth of a sluicediead) of water to flow into the town race, for which they are to receive payment at the rate of threepence per week for every house in the township. It will be seen by an advertisement in another column that the Council has decided to reconstruct a portion of the town race, so as to carry the water along the top of the terrace, ou the lino of Enniscortstrect. A meeting of the Dnnstan Jockey Club Committee was held at the Port Philip Hotel, on luesday, the 9th iust. There were present, Messrs Wm. Fraser, President; James Hazlett, Vice-President; Christophers, Thomson, Stewart, Grindley, and Wellsford. The minutes of last meeting were read, and confirmed. The following programme was adopted : —Maiden Plate, of 10 sovs.—three-quarters of a mile ; Hurdle Race, of 15 sovs.—one mile and a half, over five flights of hurdles ; Handicap Race, of 25 sovs.—one mile and a half ; Hack Race, of 15 sovs.—three-quarters of a mile heats. It was resolved that the race-course should be put into proper repair. Messrs Eraser and Wellsford were requested to canvass for subscriptions, and Dr Burrows and Mr J. Newton were elected members of the Club. The Committee accepted Mr Cox’s offer to rent the Club a room for £1 ayear. The right to occupy the Grand Stand was ordered to be sold by auction on September Gth, The proceedings were-concluded by a vote of thanks to the President.
