MAORI POINT RAGES.
These races, which were held on St. Patrick’s day (last Thursday,) attracted a considerable number of spectators from Queenstown and the surrounding districts. The weather was tine, and the course, situated on the top of the terrace, was in fair condition. Wa give a short account of the various events. Maiden Plate, of 2) sovs. Finney’s g g Gamecock (Callaghan) 1 Aspinalls eg Norman (Robinson) 2 M‘Arthur’s gf Maggie p Maggie bolted. Good race between others. Ladies’ Purse, of 20 sovs. Open to all district horses. M‘Arthur’s Maggie (Martin) 1 Finney’s Gamecock ... . (Callaghan) 2 A third horse ran, but the race lay between the two place ! horses
Shotover Handicap, of £25. Open to all horses. Smitham’s c g Mailboy, 10at 101b .... (Martin) 1 Cox’s b hj Abdallah, lOst lOlbs (Reid) 2 M‘lntyre’s b g Kory O’More, lOst .. (Poland) 0 Poulter’s c g Pompey, lOst (Callaghan) 0 Malaghau’s b m Kathleen O’More (Goodwin) 0 Kathleen came in second, but was disqualified through running inside posts. Mailboy was behind till he came into the straight running, when Martin let him out, and brought him in a winner, hands down. Miners’ and Packers’ Purse, of 15 sovs. Open to all district horses, except the winners of Ladies’ Purse and Shotover Handicap. Mile and quarter heats. Aspinall’s c g Norman ...' (Robinson) 1 1 Finney’s g g Gamecock (Callaghan) 22 M‘Arthur's Sorrell p p There was a dispute over this race in consequence of Norman’s rider being changed for the second heat. It was ultimately decided that the matter should be referred to the Victorian Bell’s Life. Consolation Handicap, of 10 sovs. Poulter’s c v Pompey (Callaghan) 1 Cox’s Abdallah (Martin) 2 Malaghau’s b in Kathleen O’.More 3 Won by about half a head, after a well-con-tested race. Hospital PiAoe, of 8 sovs., collected on the course. Miss Kirk’s b f Flora (Kitty Kirk) 1 About twelve horses entered for this race, and a most uncommon feature in it was that the winner was ridden bv her fair owner. Greats excitement was manifested during the running of this race, which was won solely throughyiih.e skilful joekeyship of the young lady. . ; J
