SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Balclutha District High School Committee held its monthly meeting on Wednesday night. Present: Messrs A. McEwau (chairman), G. H. Beid (secretary), E. Campbell, A. McDonald, C. E. Naish,.'). Clark, D. Watt, J. Ramsay and the rector (Mr W. W. Turner). CORRESPONDENCE. Secretary Otago Education Board wrote that Miss Elder, at present mistress of the Tapanui District High School, had been notified to begin her duties at Balclutha as fourth assistant when school rc-opens after the Christmas vacation.—Received.
Secretary Otago Education Bonn, wrote that the. Government subsidy oi; £2B had not yet been paid to the board by the Department.—Received. Secretary Otago Education Board wrote that the Department had declined the committee's application for a subsidy on £(i os (id, which amount imd been collected for general purposes, as after careful consideration of the claim the Minister had come to the conclusion that the contributions were of a nature which tho parents were conscious of paying .for consideration received by their children, and which they felt they were under a moral obligation to pay.--Received. RECTOR'S REPORT. The rector (Mr W. W. Turner) reported for period ending December that for the past four weeks the average attendance was: Primary, 28!); secondary, 50; total, ::48. The roll number to date was: Primary, ;12:>; secondary, (i 6; total, •'IBO. The attendance had ' been considerably affected by illness and wet weather. The Public Service Entrance and Scholarship Examinations were completed last week, and the matriculation examinations were now in progress, the candidates from the school sitting in the technical school. The rector had been asked by the Hospital Saturday Association to invite subscriptions 'from the pupils. This he did, and the amount collected, which had been forwarded to the treasurer, was £1 0s ,'lid. School library books to the value of £6 had been purchased from the local booksellers, and would be on issue to the scholars in February, 1014. The following repairs required attention:—Top for well that takes surface \vater from girls' playshed and tennis court; repairs to asphalt; window pane. The report was adopted. OUXERAL.
It was decided to hold the break-up and annual concert, on Wednesday, December 17, and that the school re-open on .Monday, February 2.
Invitations are to be extended to Messrs I"). T. Fleming, .las. Smith and P. McKinlay (Otago Education Board members), the Mayor (Mr D. Stewart), Messrs A. S. Malcolm, M.P., and R. R. Grigor, and the local clergy to attend the break-up.
- The secretary was instructed to write to the Balclutha Borough Council asking that the pavement in front of the technical school be attended to. The Works Committee was instructed to have necessary repairs at the school «'ame«l out. Mr .I. Ramsay 's name was added to the Works Committee.
In connection with the recent visit of the public to the technical school Mr McDonald moved that a vote of thanks be accorded to the rector ainUtaff for the pleasant and instructive afternoon which they had provided. ■ Accounts amounting to £7 10s were passed for payment.
