SOCIAL AT PUKETIRO.
FEOM OUR OWW CORRESPONDENT. On Thursday la«t a very successful and excellently managed social was held in the schoolroom at Puketiro. The social was given by the teacher and upper standard classes and a large number of friends of tho school attended by invitation. Mesdames Welnoski and Lucas acted as hostesses and shortly after eight o'clock the evening's amusement began. The ballast train brought contingents from Houipapa, Papatupu on the one side,'and Oaberfeidh and Papatowai on the other; returning in the morning per trolly both ways was not the least enjoyable part to many. Puketiro being situated in the watershed and the highest point of the line there is a down grade for, seven miles on either side, so it is just a matter of letting the trollies run down by gravitation, with a careful brakesman to steady the party down the steeper grades. Many songs and recitations beguiled the evening and dancing was indulged in freely and heartily. Eefreshments were in abundance and tea and coffee plentiful. The senior male pupils saw to the waiters' service and in this respect special thanks are due to Masters A. P. Peat, Wilson McPherson, Jack McPherson and Douglas Peat were ever attentive to tho guests and were under the supervision of the teacher (Mr Christie). Mr Joe Hett superindended the boilers and brewed most luscious tea, while the cakes were—as usual with the ladies of Puketiro—unrivalled for their delicacy. The weather was only threatening for a while but even it saw there was no use in being churlish and so smiled upon the function.. It had to, because every other influence was at work to make the evening spell Success, with a big, big "S." The musicians were Messrs A. Sharp, .1. Welnoski, G. H. MePherson and W. 11. Kerr, and they made their respective intsruments put life and mettle into the heels and toes of the dancers. Songs were rendered by Mrs Lucas and Messrs Sharp, Patterson and Kerr, the latter playing his own accompaniment on tho mandolin. At intervals too, recitals were heard and so the harmony went on till daylight appeared. Cheers were given for the hostesses, Mr Christie and the musicians and then " Auld Lang Syne" closed the proceedings.
