TO THE EDITOR, Sir,—-Following is the reply to a letter I sunt to the Prime Minister in regard to a petition by the residents of this district urging that they be exempted from the necessity of cutting Canadian thistles.—l am, etc., H. Sir, —1 may say that the Department fully recognises the difficulty settlers have to contend with in cutting thistles on rough country, and the Inspectors of Noxious Weeds have instructions to exercise discretion in enforcing the provisions of the Noxious Weeds Act. Following is the reply sent by the Minister of Agriculture in reference to the petition sent him by the residents of the (I'iHtrlct about the cutting of Canadian thistles to Mr Malcolm:— (Copy.) Sir, —I have the honour to inform you that the Department realises that the Noxious Woods Act makes wry heavy demands on Bottlers in which are badly weed Infested, and on this account the Act has been administered with great care. As you are aware, I had hoped to deal with this question during the current session, but pressure of business has prevented action being taken.
