.In defiance of the Friday snpofsti' tmn President Wilson has arranged to sign the great Tariff Law in the White House at nine o'clock to-night in the presence of leading members of Congress, the Vice-President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and a number of newspaper correspondents (stated the New York correspondent of •'The Daily Mail' on October 3). The law reduces the high tariff to an average of 28 per cont. ; and is the lowest tariff which America has had for three-quarters of a century. It will come into operation at midnight. More than £15,000,000 worth of goods in bond in l\ew York alone is awaiting release under the new tariff.
President Wilson will sign the epochmaking law with two pens. He will write Woodrow with one pen, which he will present to Representative Underwood, the author of the Bill, and Wilson with the other, which he will present to Senator Simmonds.
