YEAR'S DRESS BILL, £15,000.
A Contention of dressmakers "What all classes of women spend yearly on drees" was the- subject of interesting statistical addresses" delivered at Chicago before a convention of dressmakers. . It was agreed that the vearly dress budget of "a few wealthy 'Chicago women" amounted to £}0..000, compared witli £!(! expended by the average factory girl. The following table of dress expenditures was prepared hv the convention : A few, £15.000 each. One hundred leaders of Chicago society, £IO,OOO each. Ten thousand ethers, £IOOO each. Well-dressed women. £3OO. Suffragist*, £IOO. Social workers, £OO. Women typists, 5-35. Fifty factory.girls, £-10 each. It was the'opinion of Mine.' Phair, president of'the convention, that the' average wealthy woman might dress well on £IOOO a year. Mme, Phair devoted the burden of her remarks to working girls' dress expenses. She stated -that the girl wage-earners of Chicago spend half their total earnings on dres*. Of this sum 50 per cent, could be saved if girls would learn to aew ar»d jjjake their own gowns. J
