OTARIA.
[from cur own correspondfnt.] The deputation appointed by the Otaria ' Road Board to wait upon the Southland County Council at their meeting on Thursday last, to urge them to open the road from Otaria to Puker.au railway station' with all convenient haste, have returned with a very satisfactory report -from that body. The Council are to call for tenders at once, and no time is expected to be lost j m having this very necessary work done. I This will enable the settlers to convey their produce to Pukerau instead of Mataura Bridge or Clinton as formerly, which could not be done in less than two days. When the road to Pukerau is made practicable, it will be a short day's walk to and from it. The same gentlemen (Messrs Scott and Andrews) also waited as a deputation on behalf of the settlers of Otaria, Slopedown, Pukerau, and Waikaka, upon the General Manager of Railways, Invercargill,. with a petition praying for the erection of- a goods shed at Pukerau. Mr Arthur promised to do what he could in the matter, and would write shortly and inform the deputation of the result. There is a large amount of land under crop in this district this year, which is looking first-rate at present. Fortunately this district is out of the reach of floods, or perhaps I would not be able to make the above remark if I am to judge of the appearance of the Clutha since the late floods. It is to be hoped this district will not be put to the same inconvenience as last year with . regard to a threshing-mill. There is more than enough to keep one going this year. There appear to be dogs in our midst which apparently delight in having a bit of fun at night. I would suggest to the owner to keep a better look-out after them, otherwise he may find their game a costly one. Mr James Robertson had his turkeys, ducks, and fowls killed by one of these night-prowlers. Only one or two were saved. Shearing operations will commence in this district about the middle of this month. The lambing season appears to be so far very successful, although the late severe winter has told heavily on some flockowners.
