EDUCATION BOARD.

The ordinary meeting of the Eduoatlon Board was held yesterday.

The Committee appointed to confer with a deputation from the Dunedin School Committee reported that an amicable understanding had been arrived at with reference to the appointment of teachers. The Waipahi Committee asked for a reserve of three acres in block 7 for a school site, and another reserve for a globe. — Approved. An application re school buildings was adjourned. The following resignations were accepted: — G. W. Carrington, Wangaloa; Thomas Jolly, Waiwera; F. G. Odell, Alexandra.

The Appointments Committee reported that the following appointments had been agreed to by the local committees: — Miss Ritchie, matron at Milton ; W, G. Carrington, assistant master at Milton..

A letter was read from Mr Jolly, teacher, Waiwera, Btating his reasons for resigning his post as teacher. The Sohool Committee also sent a reply to Mr Jolly's reasons, and aaked that a commission b© appointed to investigate the whole matter. (The correspondence, or lettera to the same effect, appeared in our last issue.) The Chairman (Mr D. Reid) said the Committee had power to recommend the teacher's dismissal if they found matters in the school were, owing to his conduct, going wrong. He, however, thought it was evident to anyone who read the Committee's letter to whom the blame was attachable. He thought the appointing of a commission would be a mistake, and would not envy the task of those gentlemen who should be elected on one. Mr Green was of the same opinion. It having been mentioned that the Hogging case had come before tho Balclutha Resident Magistrate's Court it was decided to adjourn the whole matter till next meeting of the Board ; tho decision come to in the Court to be obtained in the meantime.
