MERCER reports for the "week ending- ' May 29, as follows :-- Retail prices only.— Fresh butter, in jib and lib prints, Is 4d to ls 6rl per lb ; fresh buttor in ' lumps, Is 3d per lb ;> powdered and salt buSier^. ■ Ik 2d to ls 3d por lb. Fresh butter is' nowrealfy scarce and some of the shops nre short supplied^ and butter has advanced on that account, f-'alt. butter in kegs, 10 Jd to lid. Cheese, best qunlitv, 9d to lOd. Side and rolled bacon, 9d to 10'Tj: Colonial hams, ls ; English hams, Is 2d to Is _■>.'■ English cheese, Is 4d, hut no domand for either. Eggs still remain scarce, and retailing at 3_ 64 per do2en.
Messrs Maclean Bbothebs report for. the 7 week ending May 29, as follows ;— Fat Cattlfl.— An unusually small supply of 7B*head of all descriptions came forward for to-day's V market. Butchers, however, seemed to he well ' supplied, and although barely half of the above v. were of prime quality, prices— while they advanced considerably— did not reach such a high ' limit as might have been expected.: Bullocks fetched from £9 to £13 17s fid; cows, from £ft '* ! to £9 10s- or eqnal to about 30s for prime, and I 22s 6d to 25s for inferior to ordinary per 100 1b,.. | Fat Calves.— None, forward. , V *' Fat Sheep.— A moderate supply of 240T Wad--, / penned, nearly all cross-bred of ' good quality. The demand was fairly active, nnd with the exception of about 150, all found buyers at, equal ,; to about last week's rates.
