WASTE LANDS BOARD.

Wednesday, May 29. Present : Messrs J. P. Maitland, Chief Commissioner, Clark, Green, Thomson, Strode, and Bastings. The following applications by deferred payment licenses for leases of their lands under section 54, of the Aot were granted : —James M'Eonnon, section 8, block V, Kuriwao ; Patrick Kean, section 20, block V, Kuriwao.

Messrs Gillies, Street, and Hi_lop. ap. plied, on behalf of David Gordon, for permission to convert seotioh 27, block IX, Waikaka, into freehold, instead of obtaining lease for same, as formerlyrequested. — Approved.

An application by Thomas Latham to purchase on north boundary of section 23, block V, Waikaka, to complete his pro* perty, was declined.

In accordance with report by Ilanger Campbell, application by Thomas A, Dawson to purchase section 39, block I, Chatton, was granted.

Mr Duncan Campbell, Morris Creek, applied, through Messrs Kenyon and Hoskina, to purchase sections 30, 36, and 50, block VII, Waipahi, under deferred payment lease. — Granted.

An application by Mr J. 0. Thomson to purchase unsurveyed land between his section, Waikaka, and railway reserve, to complete his property, was referred to the Hanger for report aa to necessity of reserving roadline.

Another application of a similar nature, by Hugh M'lntyre, was dealt with in tho same way.

The following applications to lease were approved: —

Robert Smith, section 11, block 11, Waikaka; Thomas 0. Thomson, section 9, block 11, Waikaka ; William Calder, junr., section 4, block 111, Chatton; William Calder,- senr., Bection 6, block 111, Chatton ; John Johnston, section 2, block 111, Chatton ; James Dickie, section 25, block I, Chatton ; Elizabeth Johnston, section 23, block I, Chatton ; John Pride, section 21, block I, Chatton ; Robt. Gumming, section 17, block I, Chatton ; James Aitken, section 13, block I, Chatton ; William Aitken, section 11, block I, Chatton ; Alexander Ayson, section 57, block I, Chatton.

Ranger Campbell's report on the above applications was regarded as very satisfactory and complete by the Board. A report from the District Land Officer, Lawrence, was read with regard to the nature and quality of land proposed to b© offered for sale at Tuapeka mouth. The report was adopted, with the exception of that portion recommending the land to be opened on agricultural lease. The land was ordered to be classified as suburban, and sold on deferred payments; the survey to* be made with the view of protecting present holdings. A number of applications for deferredpayment licenses were granted. The applications of Thomas Fahey and R. D. Ross for similar licenses were refused. In the former application the following resolution waa minuted : — " It appearing to the Board that the applicant has already acquired a freehold under tho deferred-payment system, it is out of tho power of the Board to allow him to make any other selection under that system; such being the case,' the license cannot issue." In the latter case the following resolution waa come to : — " It appears that applicant holds agricultural leases to the extent of 300 acres and over, and is thereby precluded by law from making the present application. License will therefore not be granted." The following applications to exchange • agricultural for deferred payment leases "' were dealt with : — Roderick Matheson, . sections, 13, and 18, block XIX, and 13, and IG, block XVI, Shotover district.— Declined, applicant not being the original " holder of the agricultural lease in question, and being thus prohibited by section 74 of the Aot from exchanging as desired. . Roderick Matheson, section 38, block XIX, Shotover, and James M'Kay, sections, 6 and 7, block IV, Crookston, approved. The Chief Commissioner said the Cromwell quesUo vexata was onco more before the Board. It now came up in the shape of an application by Oololough and others to purchase portions of section 1, block XXVII.
