The soiree at Stoney Creek on Thursday night was as usual an entire success. ' As other entertainments presented counter attractions at Balclutha, the Committee were of opinion that a very limited num"ber would assemble, but ere long the - school-room and every available apartment *was crowded to excess. It was estimated that nearly 200 were present, including •children. The tables were tastefully arranged as well as richly and amply provided, reflecting so much credit to the •ladies who so kindly contributed to them. The treat was increased by the ever-flowing quantity of well brewed tea. Mr D. Campbell performed the duties of the : ' chair very satisfactorily ; and the pleasure of tlie company was much enhanced by " the number of songs and recitations given throughout* the evening. Those whose names may be especially mentioned are /Mrs Nicol, Messrs Whiting and Denford, Messrs Waddeli, Ayson, and Munro, Warepa *, Houliston and Purvis, HillfiiV The singers, especially the ladie|_ surpassed 'themselves on the occasion. Mr Prirves and Mr Christie ?(Warepa) also gave some recitations with .much histronic power. " After the tables were cleared Mr Hen- -. derson, Hillend, addressed the meeting in •a few. words. He said he was glad to see so many present, as with the funds collected the committee would be in a position to execute the needful repairs.
