WAIWERA SCHOOL SOIREE.
'The annual soiree connected with the Waiwera school was held on the evening , of Friday week, and was one of the most successful ever held in the district.. In spite of the very unfavourable state of the weather— it rained heavily ail the after-' noon iip to the hour of irieetirig— the school-room was densely filled,' numbers' could only get standing room about the door. After the good thirigs- provided by the School Committee were discussed, --the* chair was taken by Mr -Brooks- who pre-: sided in a 'very able mariner, causing a. good deal of merriment by his very -humor-, ous remarks on the, respectiye. merits, of the various .performers.: , , A . rather,, long programme was gone through to. , tjie , evident , satisfaction . , of; all present. - Songs were sung in, first-rate style by Miss Gregg, Warepa, arid MessrsAillen,; ,o'Keef, ' arid Briggs, arid readings '.and recitations were giyeri in a very able' manner by ' Messrs,' Joily (teocher),' Brown," Tait^ 'M'Kenzie, 1 arid Littlejohri.' The: comic, songs by Mr, Allen.were.muchappreciated, arid he ha"d"fi*equeritly" to "respond to ah encore. The' proceedings' were enlivened by Mr Marzhamigiving * at intervals selections on the German .accordian ; he also sung two German , songs with accompaniment. Tlie eritertairiment was brought to a close, about half past ten by the whole company singing " Auld Lang :Syne," when the, -school-room was speedily cleared, and the youth, and beauty present indulged in : a ; dance to the.inspir-. ing strains of Mr North's violin. . Refresh-, ments in the shape of another cup of tea 'and' a bun were then handed' round, after which the dancing was resuriied, and kept up- with : animation till "the wee short' hour' ayont the . tvfal," when, all wended their way ■to their respective habitations, highly pleased with the evening's' enjoyment. ../... ■..:-,,, .., , . , : -. --. -; ■, ,
