BRUCE COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the Bruce Countj- Council was held on Tuesday. Present : Mr H. Clark, Chairman ; and Messrs Murray, Petvio, Robertson, Wayne, M'Farlano, Duff, and Smith; The following amongst other letters were read': From Mr K H. Carew, requesting the Clevk to inform him of tho number of holdings in tho different ridings. — Received and to be replied to. From Mr P. F. Stoddart, Secretary .to the P-o---srress Committee of Kaitangata, informing tho Council that on an occasion of a deputation from Kaitans-ata waiting upon the flon. the Minister for Public Works, mention was made of a lapsed vote of L2OO grantpcl by tbe late Provincial Council. Mr Larnach hail said that if written to at Wellington, giving full particulars, he would look into the matter. Tho Committee were desirous to know whether the Chairman would undertake tho matter, as the funds, if procured, would bo at tho disposal of the Council. It was moved by Mr M'Farlane, raid, seconded by Mr Petrie— "That the Road Boards interested should take action, and the Council will support them."— Carried. ROAD DEVIATION AT C I/EX ORE. Plans prepared by Mr A. Adam of the r>ropo«ed road deviation through Mr Thomas AFurrav'a property, Glen ore, were laid on the table. Th 1 "! plan showed the rond GO links wide. The Chairman pointed out that all main roads must bo in accordance with the Act — oue chain wide. , It was moved by Mr Smith, and seconded by Mr M'Farlane — " That tho road be one chain wide " — Canned. CI*ICTITO2T AND BAWrORAL. It was moved by Mr Smith, seconded by Mr Petrie — " That in the absence of Mr Lanrleis the consideration of the proportion of money to be paid by the Chrichton lioad Board to the Balmoral ißosd. "Board for management of district roads, be postponed." — Carried. MILTON BRIDGE. The Chairman stated that in pursuance of a resolution passed at last meeting, he procured from Mi* Petrie, engineer, of Dunedin, an estimate of tho cost of building a bridge with concrete piers over the Tokomairiro river near Milton, mrl the estimate was now on the table for consideration by the Council. It was moved by Mr Smith—" That the bridge be at once repaired, as it was in his opinion too expensive to build a new bridge at present, if the old one, which would only cost L2oO for repairs, would last for five or six years." Mr Petrie seconded the motion. Mr Wayne said tho Council would never build anything substantial if they kept on repairing. As; nn amendment, he movp.'l— " Thnt it is undesirable to prop up such a rotten bridge.'' The amendment was seconded by Mr Duff, and lost. fllr M'Fnrlnne said that a new bridge would cost over LIOOO, and the interest on that sum alone, would pay to repair the bridge, and keep it ?ood for five years. Then tho Council would ho in a, better positiou to build a new bridge. Pis moved — " Th:'t tlie plan of repairs recommended by tho Inspector be adopted." — Carried. Tenders to be called for the work. SUBSIDY TO ROAD BOARDS. It wns moved by Mr Robertson, and seconded by Mr Petri-5 — " That the Council giant a subsidy of LSO to each Road Board." An amendment wns moved by Mr Murray, and seconded by Mr Duff— "That an}' spare funds the Council may have, they, on an application from the Boai'ds. vots a sum of money for specific purposes, say towards repairing and keeping up heavy bridges and cuttings." The amendment was carried. ; LOUDOX'S GULLY ROAD. The- Chairman stated that the grant given to the Tokomniriro and Clenledi Boards had not been applied for, and that the work for which it bad been a\ ven, the Tokomairiro Board had declined to undertake, He asked what should be done with the amount — LSOO, Mr Wayne stated that, as a member of the Glenledi Board, he might say they wore willing to leave the amount in the hands of the Council for two or three rears until such time as the money could be expended on the road tho money was voted for. inspector's report. Tho Treasurer, Mr Nelson, read the receipts for tho month, ending 31st January, as follows :— Tolls, L 44 13s 3d: deposits, L 10; tools, 12s; goldfiolds revenue, L 4. Total, L 29 5s 3d. NOTICE OF MOTION. Mr Smith gave notice that he would move the following motion at next meeting — " That the tolls within the Bruce County be abolished."
