A letter was read from Mr M. Paterson, forwarding valuation made by him of the Inch Clutha s.n.bdiyison. The same was accepted and the Chairman, Clerk, and Mr -MosleyV were appointed to protest against several of the yalua-. tions, and attend the Assessment Court in support Of such protests. 7 - TENDERS. • ""v ■"■''. Tenders, for ditching at School and centre road were read as follows :— -Mr
P. Smith, at 10s per chain ; Mr Cle--ments, at 9s 9d y, 8r chain'; ''Mr, M'Kinlay, at Ss per chain j Mr f 4 Rowley, 7s 9d per chain. Mr Mosley objected to the ditching on the centre: road being carried out as it had never been orderd to be done by.-: the Board. t ...... Mr M'Donald contended that he had explained to the Board the necessity for the work, and it had been agreed to be carried out at the same time as the ditching at the School-road. He also explained that the adjoining proprietors bad paid half the cost ofa culvert upon. the distinct condition that the ditch on the centre road was to be cleaned out. Such being the case, the Board had only the option ot carrying out ther work or returning the money to those who had paid for the culvert. Mr Mosley objected chiefly upon the ground that the Board had never agreed to do the work. The Board was . not' responsible for any arrangements mem- , hers might make outside arid he affirmed' j that the clearing of the centre ditch. had I never even been mentioned at any meeting* of the Board. -He- would not' agree to the ;work being carried out unless justice were done to the settlers lower dons the island, and 'unless the ditches there were also cleaned mit'. The Chairman said there could be no doubt the work was necessary, but "he never understood it was agreed -to; be done by the Board, . It was quite evident that a misunderstanding had arisen in connection with the matter. A long discussion ensued, in the course cf whicli several motions and amendments were made. Ultimately it w«s agreed that the work be done, and that an equal sum to that expended by the Board upon .the upper • centre ditch be also expended upon the lower ditch. ' The tender by T. Rowley was then accepted for tbe work. METALLING AT KAITANGATA. Tenders for removing metal from the Swamp road and spreading near to Kaitangata, were read as follows z— John Miller, 4s fid per yard • W. Reid, 45,, per yard , Thomas Stevens, 3s Gd per yard ; John Johnstone, 3s. The latter tender was accepted. ACCOUNTS. An acconnt, Mr M'Kinlay, L 4 lis, was passed for payment. An account, W. Watts, L 54, less progress payment, L15 — L 39, was handed' in. Mr Anderson opposed the passing or the account, upon the ground that the work had not h*-en completed. Payment deferred. HATES. The collector reported that the sum of L 266 lis of rates had been collected, and that, only a few pound-- were nowoutstanding. SEPARATION. Mr Smith said. he considered- the time had come when the two subdivisions should be separated. He moved accordingly. Mr Anderson seconded. Mr Mosley considered a better plan would be to have Tnch Clntha and Stirling proclaimed a Municipality, in which case they would get- an endowment of 2000. acres of land. .. 7 •■ The Chairman said the inhabitants of Kaitangata were very anxious for iaMunicipality. Perhaps they would join them. Mr Mosley said no doubt an Act would be passed at next session of Assembly to meet the Kaitangata caseInch Clutha and Stirling* could also get an Act to suit. them. Mr Anderson said 'that if separation of the two subdivisons were to be carried out this year it would require to be gone about at once.
The Chairman said each subdivision might be merged into the County, and then proclaimed separate road districts.
The subject was then allowed to i drop. KAITANGATA JETTY. Mr Anderson reported that the .floating approach to Kaitangata jetty inquired calking. It had sunk once and ... although it had again been lifted it would stand no weight' until' 1 calked. Sundry other small repairs were;, re- " r quired.
