CLUTHA ROAD BOARD.
The Board met on Saturday, when there were present : Messrs Christie (Chairman), Sandilands, and McNeil.
The minutes of la**t meeting were read and approved of.
The Committee appointed at last meeting, reported that on the advice of Mr Paterson, Engineer, that they had let the contract on Otanomomo swamp for L 205 ; and the Gorge road for L7B, to Mr W. Morton ; and the Bush road for L 32, to Mr George Pullen.— The report of the Committee was adopted.
The Clerk intimated tbat he had received notice from the County Council of their decision on the roads the Board had decided might be closed, and that in all cases the judgment of the Board had been sustained with the exception of the Finnegand road, in reference to which the judgment had been reversed, and the road left open.
The Chairman said it now devolved on the Board to declare publicly tbat the roads are closed, and they would also have to take up Mr Leslie's letter askino* obstructions to be removed from the Finnegand road. It was moved, seconded, and carried, that the Clerk be instructed to request the Messrs Avson to remove forthwith, all obstacles
on the said road-line ; and to notify to Mr Leslie that such a request had been made.
The Clerk read tbo Engineer's report, which was as follows : — '' I called on Mr Shaw in regard to tbe improvements he is making on Riverside road. The work consists in cutting down trees and scrub, and filling up a hallow part of the road where it passes through the bush behind his residence. The work, ivhen completed, will be a great, improvement, as the place in time of wet weather used to be a pool of water. The subsidy you propose to give, viz., L 5, will be something like 2s to the £ on the amount Mr Shaw intends to lay .out to make the road. I have ordered timber for the bridge and culvert that require to bo renewed, also a few planks extra in case any of the planks on the other bridge should j>ive way. The road where it passes Mr Thomson's place, is in a very bad state. He has not removed his stockyard yet, but through time and the weather it is fast going to ruins. It is not creditable either to the Road Board or to Mr Thomson tbat such a dilapidated building should be allowed to stand. — Matthew Patisuson." The Clerk said he had seen Mr Thomson personally, and he had expressed his willinpness and intention to remove the stockyard. The Chairman was authorised to collect all outstanding rates after Feb. Ist, and to issue summonses against all defaulters. Tenders having been opened, the Board let the contract at Begg and Sheddan's for LSO, and at Dalgleish's for LIS, to Mr Hugh Munro, and the contract at Mosley's for L2O, and metalling at M'Neil's at L 3 10s per chain, to Mr George Pullen. Messrs Christie, Sarginson, and M'Neil were appointed a committee to watch over tbe interests of the Board till next meeting on the third Saturday of March.
