The Holidays.
CLINTON RACES. The Clinton annual races was held on New Year's Day on the Kuriwao Estate. The weather was all that could be desired, and- there were from 300 to 400 people present, including a good sprinkling of the fair sex. The different events were well contested, except the Hurdle Race, which was a walk-over for Romance. Much credit is due to the Stewards and members of Committee for the prompt manner in which they carried out the programme. The following is the list of events : — Handicap Htnmnn Race, of 15 soys. Mr Lawson's br g Romance ("Owner) 1 Three horses started, but Plora bolted off the course, and Freedom baulked at the first jump. Romance was thus left to win as he pleased. Maident Plate, of 10 soys. Mr Townsend's g f Lucy (M'Donald) 1 Mr Monaghan's c g Haricot (( hvner) 2 Mr Pollock's eh c Captain Dousrlas ... (Dunne) 3 Skylark also came to the post, but did not succeed in getting away. Clinton Handicap, of 20 soys. Mr Moffat's br m Jenny Lind (M'Donald) 1 Mr Dunne's c g Stranger (Dunne) 2 Mr Pollock's Phoebe and Telemachus also ran, aud Maggie and Romeo were scratched. Hack Selling Race, of 10 soys. Mr Dunne's c g Romoo (Dunne) 1 Mr Monasrh an's c % Haricot (Owner) 2 Mr Pollock's c g Rufus (Mason) 3 Two others ran. . - l '-omeo was bought by Mr P. Mason. for £16. Handicap Trotting Race, 0f. 7 kovs. Mr Sparks' c m Lucy (150 yds) ... 1 Mr Swan's br g Darkey (scratch) ... 2 Mr Campbell's b m Goddess (50yds) ... 3 Consolation Hanpicap, of 7 soys. Mr Pollock's eh m Phoebe (Mason) _ Mr Dunne's oh g Stranger (Dunne) 2 The Hurry Scurry, of 7 soys. , for which there were seven entries, produced a magnificent contest between Romeo and Rufus, the former Winning just at the finish. Sports. Foot Race, 100 yds. — lst, Chapman, Ll ; 2nd, Mullaly, 10s. Hop, Step, and Leap. — lst, 15s, Wm.. Low, 36ft llin j 2nd, 7s 6d, Wallace, 35ft llin. Handicap Foot Race, 300 yds, — lst, Chapman, L 2 ; 2nd, Cheyne, 81, Running. High Leap. — Nelson and Cheyne having tied, divided the stakes.
