',";.. : y Mr Anderson called the, attention of the Board to a number of places where tlie river was- speedily washing away the roadlines, and pointed out that -''unless, some protective works were undertaken the ex- ; pense 'in the .purchase of ' road-liiies and o therwise': would shortly be enormous. , The Chairman pointed out that nothing could be done in: the matter until the river fell. In the meantimeleach member might examine -as to the damage" arid report at next meeting. Mr Mosley said in -many cases a few piles and a little straw would be all that ' -would be necessary to protect the banks. Mr Smiih-> thought it -was - the -;. duty of the County Councils tp attend to' the matter, as it was altogether beyond the power of Boad- Boards to undertake such expensive works as would be required.' Mr Mosley said the Councils should certainly do the work,- and 'that was the reason he was so anxious to have the island a separate riding. If ifc was not so proclaimed, then the -inhabitants should form themselves into a Municipality. The Boad Boards could not maintain the river bank roads wliich were being washed
. Mr Smith said -the Board of Conservators when proclaimed "would no doubt attend to the river banks. They . should have a Board for the north .side of the river, as well as for the island.
