The Chairman, Clutha County Council. Sir, — I have the honour to inform you ; that I attended to your instructions re-' ceived on the 3rd October, and have to report as follows : — 1. I inspected the road-line running from Greenvale bridge to Taylor's creek, : as far as the boundary of the Clutha County. From Greenvale bridge to the Waikoikoi creek, a distance of about 11 miles, there is not much required,, a sum of L2OO will make it a passable road ; but from the Waikoikoi creek to the boundary of the County, with the exception of a few chains, it will all require to be formed. The road-line passes over a series of small creeks, gullies, and swamps.. Estimated cost of formation, LISOO, but', unless li mile be metalled it will not carry heavy traffic. ■" Distance from Waikoikoi creek to the boundary of' the County about six ■miles. The work most urgently requiring to be* done is to make up two gullies and to reduce the gradient on the ridge between sections 44 and 50, block VI. ; if j this were done the settlers to the north of this, place would be able to get on to the road leading to the Gore Railway Station, . or to Mr M'lntyre's crossing, where I understand a station or siding is to be put in. j 2. The work required at "Logan's pinch " is being proceeded with, but the sum voted was not sufficient, as I found that it was necessary to put in a culvert ; estimated cost, LlO. 3. I inspected the road at the landing place at Catlins, and the money voted for that piece of road is being expended in widening the formation, filling up the ruts with metal, and putting in culverts.— rl have, &c, Matthew Patebson, Engineer to County Council.
