THE OTAGO SHOW.

The exhibition of stock, dairy produce, etc., held under the auspices of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society, was held at the Forbury, Dunedin, on Wednesday arid Thursday last It was not, to be expected that the first show of the Society would be anything very great, but consideringthe large amount of money raised for prizes, we must confess that - better results might have been anticipated The Dunedin Show has yet a long- way to progress before it can be said to be worthy of Otng'o, and before it can possess much influence as a metropolitan exhibition. Had not the pretentions — j the puffing vp — been so great, the disappointment; would not have been so much felt. Had it been a district show, it would have been regarded as a very creditable one, but as a grand metropolitan "how it was not creditable ; and had it not been for the stock forwarded from the Clutha and surrounding districts, it would have been a failure. Indeed, in many respects the recent show here was a superior one. It will be observed from the annexed list that in the most important and valuable classes, a good share of the prizes fell to stoekowners in this neighbourhood. In the merinos, the Messrs Johnston, Kaihiku, and John Anderson, Wyndham, carried off the chief honours ; Mr John Johnston's ram. securing the champion prize. In the shorthorns, the N. Z. and A. L. Co. were deservedly successful. According to the judges at the Clutha show, the Clydevale bull was placed before that of Mr Gflorge M'Donald, of Inch Clutha. According to the Dunedin judges, this was reversed, and " Charlie Barry" was created champion of the Clutha. We may also mention that Mr Charters' prize heifer in class 6, was bred by Mr M'Donald. If others in the Clutha were to folhw Mr M 'Donald's example in the matter of stock, It would no doubt be found most convenient to hold the Otago Show in the Clutha, and thus save the most valuable of the prize stock from having so far to travel. In the fat cattle class the N. Z. and A.'L. Company carried off the most of the prizes. One bullock shown by them was very much admired, and we believe it would be difficult to find a better bred animal in the country. Of the draught horses there was a very fair show. Mr G. Martin obtained the champion prize lor Prince of Wales. In the thoroughbred class Mr Dodson's Cassivellaunus was placed first, Mr G. (Joombe's Barwon second, and the Flying Dutchman third.- The following are the most important; portions of the prize list : — SHEEP. •VITERHSTO BIVBJ3D. . Judges ':'■ Messrs W. S. Davidson aDd E. L.
