.* (The ordinary meeting of this Council was held on Tuesday in the 'Council Chambers, Milton. -Present —--Messrs Clark (chairman), Murray, Wayne, Robertson, Smith, Petrie, Landels, and Duff. -' : CORRESPONDENCE. From the Tokomairiro Road Board, forwarding a copy* of a resolution "which was agreed, to at last meeting of the Board — "That this Board agrees to the LSO subsidy which was voted to the Board by the County Council, being expended, on the road leading from Dunn's bridge to the Glenledi and Coast districts." -..--:
Mr Smith moved and Mr Duff seconded — "That the Council should not grant the request, arid decides to accede to its former resolution."
Mr Murray strongly opposed the motion, which, after a discussion, was put and carried.
.From Colonial Secretary, dated 28th August, in answer to* a letter which had been forwarded by the Chairman, asking* that a Commission be appointed by the Govemvhent to enquire into the misunderstanding which exists between the Glenledi and Tokomairiro Road Boards with reference to a certain road line, stating that steps would be taken to meet the case, in ; tile -amended Public Works Act; , also, -a letter, dated Ist September, stating that the. matter appears to be wholly within the competence of the local authorities to deal with.
From the Crichton Road Board, asking that the piece of road leading from the main road to the Lovells Flat railway station should be made a County road. — It was- agreed that, the request should, not be acceded to.
Letters were read from the Glenledi and Crichton Road Boards, asking that the Council should confirm- the decisions of the ratepayers with regard to the. closing of certain road lines. — The request in each ease was acceded to.
From the Balmoral Road Board, requesting that the boundary, road line between the Crichton and Balmoral districts should be placed under the control of the Balmoral Road Board.
On the motion of Mr Smith, it was agreed that the request should be acceded to.
A letter was read from Messrs Haggitt and Brent, in. reply to the Board, stating that there is a roadline one chain wide reserved along* the banks of the south branch of the Tokomairiro river, where it passes Mr Thomas Murray's property, -viz-, sections 2, 3, 4, and 4, block xlix., Tokomairiro district.
The Chairman mentioned that one portion of the reserve was how only half a chain, wide, and.; there was a water-race along* the roadline, which was : also. damaging it by causing the earth to slip into: the river. As the river bank had all been "washed by Chinamen for gold, the earth was disturbed,; and every flood which came wished away a good portion of it. It was agreed, on the motion of Mr Smith, seconded by 'Mr Robertson— "That the Inspector should be instructed to, stop the. water-race on the road line, look into the matter, and •bring up a report at next meeting." ....
